Dutch water sector exports for 2021 estimated at just over EUR 8.1 billion

The WEX report shows the geographical areas that are considered to be the most promising markets for export, and it suggests topics and themes that are critical to the Dutch water sector in order to expand further.

Importance of export for the Dutch water sector is growing

In the period 1995-2004, about one third of the turnover in the water sector was generated by exports. An export quota of more than 40% is expected for 2021 and 2022. This shows that the importance of export for companies in the Dutch water sector is firmly increasing. It makes the export of the Dutch water sector crucial for the economic outlook and employment in the sector.

Cooperation is key

In general, the water sector is positive about the opportunities in 2022 and 2023. The WEX report reveals an expected growth rate in the export of water activities in 2022 of over seven percent. The outlook for 2023 is estimated at eight percent growth. That said, the contributors to the WEX emphasise that cooperation with companies as well as with other sector participants, both in the Netherlands and abroad, is critical for a successful export strategy.

In addition, building and maintaining international relations and networks, as well as investing in innovation are vital in maintaining a competitive edge on the international market. There are several ways to do this such as through demonstration projects and pilots, and good marketing and promotion of Dutch expertise in water.

Support from Netherlands Water Partnership

The Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) actively supports the Dutch water sector worldwide, for example by organising networking and promotional activities that focus on cooperation and cross-sectoral solutions.

NWP is also active in promoting the integrated approach, offers support in consortia formation, and helps with access to export and project financing. By using the extensive NWP network at home and abroad, NWP offers the Dutch water sector access to strategic partnerships with local (international) parties and partners.
