Asia-Netherlands Water Learning Week 2026: strengthening partnerships for healthy rivers

Throughout the week, participants explored how integrated approaches, practical knowledge and international cooperation can help create more resilient river systems and stronger water investments.

Governance matters

The week opened with exchanges with Dutch public institutions, underlining that successful water management is not only about infrastructure, but equally about governance, policy, regulation and cooperation. Dutch Water Envoy Meike van Ginneken helped set the scene for the delegation. An interactive role play led by The Hague Academy for Local Governance highlighted the complexity of working with multiple stakeholders. 

The programme concluded at IHE Delft, where discussions focused on translating knowledge into practice, including financing aspects moderated by Henk Ovink of the Global Commission on the Economics of Water.

From flood safety to healthy river systems

A key theme during the week was how flood protection and healthy ecosystems can go hand in hand. Participants explored ADB’s multi-layered approach to rivers alongside the Dutch integrated perspective on river basin and landscape management. Contributions from landscape architects, EcoShape and Deltares demonstrated how nature-based solutions can support resilience, planning and long-term sustainability.

Building partnerships across borders

Beyond the technical sessions, ANWLW created valuable new connections between Asian delegations and the Dutch water sector. A networking reception, organised together with RVO, featured dedicated country roundtables and offered a dynamic platform to explore future collaboration opportunities.
