The first batch of Young Experts from YEP Programmes Phase III gathered in The Hague on 17 June for the kick-off of an intensive 2.5 week training programme. In total, 23 enthusiasts from 11 countries will begin their international placements in the water and agrifood sectors upon completing their training.
Besides the Young Experts, YEP’s kick-off event was attended by the YEP network consisting of YEP coaches, members of the participating organisations, and the YEP Programmes Bureau. The occasion was an excellent opportunity to connect, get acquainted, and reflect on the exciting journey ahead. Several inspiring speakers shared their experiences and reflections on international collaboration and professional development.
Wampie Libon, Director of Inclusive Green Growth at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasised the importance of long-term partnerships in addressing global challenges. She highlighted the strength of the Dutch Diamond approach, in which government, businesses, knowledge institutions, financial institutions, and civil society organisations work together to create a sustainable impact.
Wim Goris, Partnership Builder at the Netherlands Food Partnership, reflected on his own first international experiences and noted how programmes such as YEP provide young professionals with a valuable head start.
Rick Elmendorp, Director of the Netherlands Water Partnership, encouraged participants to trust their instincts and remain open to new experiences. The session was moderated by YEP’s host, Petra Stienen, who highlighted the importance of community building, both abroad and at home.
The speakers shared practical advice for the new cohort: stay curious, seek guidance from experienced professionals, build strong networks, and embrace the unexpected. With enthusiasm, and a commitment to making a difference, these Young Experts will soon take the first steps in their international careers and contribute to innovative projects around the world.
YEP Programmes is a public-private partnership that strives to develop human capital in the water and agrifood sectors through Dutch organisations that operate in low-income countries and emerging markets. Through intensive capacity building, YEP and its partner organisations invest in young talent to safeguard the availability of expertise and professionalism in international cooperation in the years to come.
The YEP Water and YEP Agrofood specialisation programmes are supported by the Netherlands Water Partnership and the Netherlands Food Partnerships respectively, and are funded by the Inclusive Green Growth Department of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since its inception in 2013, nearly a thousand Young Experts have been involved in YEP Programmes.
YEP Programmes began its third phase in January 2026 and will run until December 2032. In this phase, it plans to start three new batches each year. They will open numerous opportunities to develop capacity internationally in the Netherlands and abroad. The YEP Programmes Bureau team will host regular information sessions for organisations willing to partner with YEP as well as for young professionals interested in developing their international careers as Young Experts. Updates on these and other activities will be announced on the YEP Programmes’ website.
