First results of field trials shared at KNAP research project consortium meeting

This informative session marked an important step towards the development of high-quality, safe, and sustainably recycled fertilisers derived from circular sanitation, urban wastewater, and process water from the agro-food industry.

KNAP public-private partnership

The KNAP Public-Private Partnership project focuses on closing nutrient cycles from municipal and industrial wastewater systems. By developing and applying innovative concepts in practice, the project aims to enhance the recovery and reuse of nutrients from wastewater, targeting their use in agriculture and other sectors. This offers opportunities for water authorities, fertiliser producers and traders, the agricultural sector, and the agri-food industry, to collaborate on achieving sustainable nutrient cycle solutions.

The project encompasses nine diverse case studies, five focused on municipal wastewater and four on industrial water. These cases explore the quality and quantity of recyclable fertilisers, assess their agricultural value, and identify potential distribution routes. Additionally, a comprehensive quality system is being developed to establish criteria for evaluating recycled fertilisers.

The KNAP project provides a unique opportunity to strengthen the circular economy through safe and sustainable fertilisers, with a focus on innovation and collaboration across various sectors. The Nutrient Platform, part of the Netherlands Water Partnership, is Coordinating Organisation of the KNAP research project. Key research partners are NWP-members KWR, LeAF, and Wageningen Environmental Research & University.
