Latin America faces a wide range of water-related challenges, including extreme droughts and subsequent wildfires, deadly floods, heavily polluted urban areas, and poor coastal protection. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the foreground existing water challenges such as a limited access to clean water and proper sanitation, weak wastewater treatment systems, and a poor water governance. These factors, combined with an increased awareness about the effects of climate change and the need to be resilient, create strong momentum to connect water experts and share innovations and experiences, as well as to involve all stakeholders to tackle these water-related challenges together.
With this context in mind, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), the embassies of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Venezuela, and Rotterdam Partners and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) hosted a five-part webinar series to discuss possible solutions to the most urgent water challenges in Latin America. This is a follow-up series to the successful ‘Tackling water challenges in Latin America together’ webinar series of 2020, where a first effort was made to connect Latin American and Dutch experts on topics such as resilience, water quality, the circular economy, food security, and water governance.
The ‘Advancing solutions for water-related challenges in Latin America together’ webinar series built on these connections and went more in depth on the most pressing issues and the most recent developments in the region. It aimed to inspire, share knowledge and good practices, and connect Dutch and Latin American experts on the water challenges of today. The audience included Latin American water and experts, urban and environmental planners, scientists, decisionmakers, young professionals, as well as Dutch firms either active or with business interests in the region.
