A lot is happening in the area of quality and sanitation in Brazil. Currently only 50% of Brazil's 200 million inhabitants has access to proper sanitation and sewage, and 35 million don't have access to drinking water. In the state of São Paulo, the State Government has devised a plan to clean up the Pinheiros River. It is investing the equivalent of EUR 235 million in the ‘Novo Rio Pinheiros’ (New Pinheiros River) initiative which will benefit about three million people by improving their water and sanitation services.
The Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in São Paulo, with support from the State Government of São Paulo, hosted a webinar on 19 May 2021 to provide insight into the current state of project development for the Novo Rio Pinheiros project, a plan to improve the water and sanitation services of about three million people. During the webinar, the possible added value of collaboration and knowledge sharing between the Dutch and Brazilian water sectors was explored, as well as the interest of the Dutch water sector in the state of São Paulo.
The webinar included presentations from leading figures of São Paulo’s state utility companies SABESP, CETESB, DAEE, and EMAE in order to make the audience acquainted with their role in Novo Rio Pinheiros. Thereafter, speakers from Beccan Davila Urbanismo, MVRDV, and Arcadis Brazil showcased innovative projects with overlap with the Novo Rio Pinheiros project. Full programme can be seen here.
