Introductory letter to the new Dutch Schoof Cabinet

On behalf of the wider Dutch water sector, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) recently sent an introductory letter to the members of the Schoof Cabinet. In the letter, we emphasise the vital importance of the Dutch water sector in the safety, sustainability, and economic growth of the Netherlands, both domestically and internationally.

The Netherlands' new Government, led by non-partisan Prime Minister Dick Schoof, officially took office on 6 July 2024. In addition to Prime Minister Schoof, the new Government team consists of 15 ministers and 13 secretaries of state.

Request for continued support and commitment

We urged the Cabinet to continue and, where necessary, intensify the existing policies that recognise and support the crucial role of our sector. This is essential for the economic prosperity of our nation and to make sure that both our country and the world are prepared for the challenges related to climate, water security, and sustainable development. We reiterated the continued commitment from the entire Dutch water sector to help the Dutch Government with this.

We hope that the letter to the Schoof Cabinet will inspire the new Ministers to encourage their policy makers and implementing bodies to take decisive action in continuing the policies that support and advance the Dutch water sector.

Close cooperation between the Government and the water sector

We emphasised that close cooperation between the Government and the water sector is essential to address the challenges of the coming years. We look forward to a constructive and fruitful collaboration with the Cabinet so that we can jointly achieve the national and international water objectives.

Future conversations

In the letter, we invited the Cabinet to further discuss these issues at the NWP office. So far, we have received positive feedback from several Ministries. A discussion that will include various NWP members is scheduled with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation that will focus on national and international water policy. We are driving these efforts forward and eagerly anticipate future conversations with Ministries and other political stakeholders.
