NWB Bank is a bank of and for the public sector that focuses particularly on water and sustainability. NWB Bank was founded in 1954 by the water authorities and is the main financer of the Dutch public water sector which also includes drinking water companies. The bank's activities focus particularly on initiatives that contribute to water management and quality. To specifically ensure lending to the water authorities, NWB Bank has been issuing Water Bonds since 2014. The proceeds from these sustainable bonds have been used to finance water authorities' projects that contribute to climate mitigation, climate adaptation and biodiversity. Over the years, NWB Bank has become a prominent player in the international capital market in the field of Green Bonds. NWB Bank is only active in the Netherlands, however, in 2006 the bank established the NWB Fund which co-finances international partnership projects run by the water authorities. The fund helps the water authorities meet the demand for their expertise in solving global water-related issues.
