The Netherlands UNESCO WMO Water Committee (NUWWC)

NUWWC-LOGO

The Netherlands UNESCO WMO Water Committee (NUWWC) is a science, policy and practice platform that brings together Dutch academic, research and operational organisations, and policy institutes working in the water sector. They contribute to the international water programmes of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme and the World Meteorological Organization’s activities under its Vision and Strategy on Hydrology.

The Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) is an NUWWC observer and thereby supports UNESCO’s and WMO’s water programmes. NWP’s role includes sharing Dutch expertise and lessons learned, as well as fostering collaboration that supports scientific progress, capacity development and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 in committee-related activities.

This partnership underlines NWP’s mission to support the Dutch water sector in tackling global water challenges while strengthening its international reach and impact. Rick Elmendorp, Director of NWP describes its mission as: “By engaging in the work of the NUWWC and acting as a Committee observer, we connect the knowledge and expertise of the Dutch water sector with international programmes. This partnership allows us not only to contribute to global water challenges, but also to bring valuable insights back to the Netherlands. It is an important step in bringing science, policy and practice closer together.”

UNESCO and WMO

UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme is a United Nations intergovernmental initiative dedicated to freshwater research, management and capacity development. The WMO acts as a global framework for hydrology in meteorology, climate research and the cryosphere, and facilitates the exchange of data and services to support sustainable water management worldwide. Since 1964, the NUWWC has served as a key link between the Dutch water sector and the international water programmes of both organisations.
