Netherlands Water Partnership supporting glacier preservation

The Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) is dedicated to addressing some of the world’s most pressing water challenges. As a key network for Dutch water expertise, NWP actively collaborates with global stakeholders to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for water-related issues, including the preservation of glaciers, access to clean water, and climate adaptation.

World Water Day

World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, is an annual United Nations Observance day that focuses on the importance of freshwater. It celebrates water and raises awareness about the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. World Water Day is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.  

Every year, UN-Water – the UN’s coordination mechanism on water and sanitation – sets the theme for World Water Day. In 2023, the focus was on Accelerating Change and in 2024 on Leveraging Water for Peace. In 2025, the theme will be Glacier Preservation.

The role of glaciers: Earth's frozen ‘water towers’

Glaciers are a crucial source of freshwater for millions of people worldwide, but they are increasingly under threat due to climate change. Glaciers store about 70 percent of the Earth’s freshwater and play a critical role in regulating the planet’s climate.

During warmer seasons, glaciers slowly melt, releasing water downstream. In many parts of the world, this helps keep water flowing in places that might otherwise dry up. However, because of climate change, glaciers are melting faster than ever, which could change the water cycle in ways that can affect people and the environment.

Glaciers and climate change: why we must act now

As global temperatures rise, glaciers lose mass, exacerbating sea level rise and threatening water supplies for billions of people. If we don't act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, this trend will worsen, leading to more extreme weather, floods, and water shortages.

By limiting global warming to 1.5°C, we can help slow the melting of glaciers and preserve these vital water sources. Adapting to the changing climate is also crucial – this means building better water management systems and preparing communities for changing water availability.

NWP members and glacier preservation

Many NWP members are at the forefront of efforts to protect the vital resources that glaciers represent by developing advanced monitoring systems, sustainable water management practices, and climate-resilient solutions.

Rick Elmendorp, Director and Chair of the Netherlands Water Partnership, emphasised the importance of these initiatives: “Many of our members are involved in preserving glaciers, recognising their critical role in global water security. Through collaboration and innovation, we aim to tackle the pressing challenges of glacier retreat and ensure a sustainable future for water resources worldwide.”
