DGD and NWP formalise partnership to strengthen integrated Dutch water and horticulture solutions

Why closer cooperation between water and horticulture matters

Across the world, sustainable food production increasingly depends on reliable and efficient water systems, while many regions face growing water scarcity and climate stress. These challenges are deeply interconnected – a reality reflected in the international Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus approach.

This interdependence is particularly visible in Controlled Environment Agriculture where food production relies on stable, high-quality water supplies and efficient reuse, and where water and energy systems directly shape the climate inside and around the greenhouse. It is grounded in the belief that local food systems can only thrive when water is managed responsibly and sustainably. Addressing these aspects together, rather than in isolation, leads to more robust, scalable and resource-efficient systems.

A partnership built on complementary strengths

The MoU between DGD and NWP builds on clear synergies. By linking Dutch water technology with advanced horticulture, the two sectors can offer integrated solutions that are highly relevant in water-scarce regions. Acting together also strengthens international visibility, especially where governments are seeking holistic approaches to water and food security. Joint thematic work accelerates innovation on water inside and outside the greenhouse, while coordinated missions and broader networks expand opportunities for companies wishing to position themselves as part of a complete system.

Focus on regions where the Nexus is a daily reality

The collaboration prioritises the Middle East, followed by North Africa and parts of Asia – regions where water availability, food demand and climate challenges are closely linked. In these contexts, integrated solutions are essential rather than optional. Through this MoU, DGD and NWP can jointly develop and promote Dutch systems solutions that support long-term resilience and sustainable local production.
