The Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of the Netherlands have taken an important step in strengthening their bilateral cooperation on water by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on water resources management.
New MoU on water resources management signed by Oman and the Netherlands
The agreement reflects the growing partnership between the two countries and their shared goal of advancing sustainable water management, water security, innovation, and knowledge exchange.
The MoU was signed by H.E. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals of Oman, on behalf of Oman’s Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources, and H.E. Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands.
Advancing sustainable water management and water security
The agreement establishes a framework for enhanced collaboration in areas including water resources management, integrated planning, governance, capacity development, and the application of modern technologies. By bringing together Dutch and Omani expertise, the partnership aims to support sustainable development and contribute to the creation of resilient water systems capable of meeting future challenges.
As water scarcity, climate change, and increasing demand for water resources continue to affect regions around the world, international cooperation has become increasingly important. Through this agreement, Oman and the Netherlands are strengthening their commitment to developing innovative and sustainable solutions that improve water security and resilience.
Building on a strong Oman-Netherlands water partnership
Both countries recognise the critical role of water in achieving long-term economic, environmental, and social resilience. Oman and the Netherlands have already built a strong relationship in the water sector over many years, with growing exchanges between government institutions, knowledge organisations, and the private sector.
The signing of this MoU marks a significant milestone in further deepening that cooperation and creating new opportunities for joint learning, technical exchange, and innovation. It also creates a formal framework for expanding collaboration in areas where both countries possess valuable expertise and experience.

Strengthening the work of the Oman-Netherlands Water Taskforce
The Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) warmly welcomes the signing of the MoU and is delighted to see water cooperation between Oman and the Netherlands being further formalised at the governmental level.
The MoU will also strengthen and support the ongoing work of the Oman-Netherlands Water Taskforce, which brings together stakeholders from both countries to expand collaboration and accelerate joint efforts to address water-related challenges and opportunities. NWP serves as the Secretariat of the Taskforce and has actively facilitated dialogue, knowledge exchange, and partnership development between Dutch and Omani organisations.
NWP looks forward to continued bilateral water cooperation
Looking ahead, NWP is pleased that the new agreement will feed directly into the activities and goals of the Oman-Netherlands Water Taskforce. The strengthened governmental commitment creates new momentum for collaboration between public authorities, knowledge institutes, and businesses in both countries.
NWP looks forward to continuing its work with partners in Oman and the Netherlands. Together, our efforts will enhance sustainable and resilient water management and help address shared water challenges for future generations.
