Senegal, Mauritania & the Netherlands, bridging knowledge on coastal and basin resilience

NWP invites the Dutch water sector to a networking reception with a visiting delegation from Senegal and Mauritania on Thursday, 5 November, in The Hague. The reception is part of a study visit on resilient coastal and basin management, bringing together public-sector leaders, technical experts and WACA Program representatives from both countries with Dutch water-sector organisations.

The reception is an opportunity to exchange experience, explore shared challenges and connect with people working on practical approaches to resilience in West Africa and the Netherlands.

WACA Program

The West Africa Coastal Areas Management Program (WACA) is a World Bank programme that supports efforts to strengthen coastal resilience across the region. West African coastal areas face challenges including erosion, pollution, pressure on natural resources, rapid urbanisation and unsustainable land use. The WACA Program works with participating countries to help address these pressures and improve coastal management.

About the study visit

Organised by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) on behalf of the Climate, Water and Food Facility (CWF), in close collaboration with EcoShape, Invest International and the WACA Program, the visit takes place from 2 to 6 November.

The programme focuses on Dutch approaches and expertise in:

Nature-based solutions (NbS) for coastal resilience, including dunes, beach nourishment and approaches for ports
Integrated coastal management, from coastal monitoring and data tools to planning and management decisions
River-basin governance, including transboundary cooperation, stakeholder engagement and innovative monitoring technologies
Climate adaptation and finance, including public-private partnerships and investment in resilient projects

Why connect?

Senegal and Mauritania are advancing different stages of the WACA Program as well as other coastal protection works, and both face coastal and environmental challenges that call for collaboration across institutions and sectors.

The network reception is an opportunity to meet key stakeholders from Senegal and Mauritania who are working to strengthen coastal and basin resilience and are interested in Dutch expertise. Dutch professionals from the private sector, civil society, research institutes, financial institutes and academia are invited to exchange perspectives and learn more about emerging priorities and opportunities in both countries.

The reception may be especially relevant to professionals working in engineering and contracting, flood prevention, coastal protection, urban planning, architecture and nature-based solutions.

On 2020, under the WACA Program, NWP and the World Bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support West Africa’s efforts to build coastal resilience.

The study visit builds on longstanding cooperation between RVO, the World Bank, and Dutch partners to share knowledge and support coastal resilience and nature-based solutions in West Africa.
