With three major rivers flowing through it ─ the Ganges, Meghna and Brahmaputra, the major part of Bangladesh lies in the Ganges Delta, the largest delta in the world. It is also one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

Challenges

As a result of the dynamics of the water system, there is a need for a wide range of expertise in the Bangladeshi water sector such as integrated water management, coastal management, dredging and land reclamation. Flooding is a major problem in Bangladesh. High sedimentation rates also present a great challenge to maintain the navigability and safe water levels in the water systems. Climate change, urbanisation and intensifying industrial activities further stress the needs for sustainable water management solutions and technologies. Improving the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) condition remains highly important in Bangladesh, in both rural and urban areas.

Collaboration

An important milestone in the collaboration between Bangladesh and the Netherlands is the strategic partnership on the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100. An MoU was signed in 2012 to develop the plan and in September 2018 the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100 was approved by the Bangladeshi government, paving the way for follow-up projects that develop and implement the Delta Plan.

Bangladesh Water Sector Network Study

In 2018, Light Castle Partners prepared the Bangladesh Water Sector Network Study for the Partners for Water program. The study provides strategic insights on the status quo and future prospects for the water sector in Bangladesh. Furthermore, it highlights the areas that the Dutch water sector can contribute positively to assist Bangladesh in addressing some of the challenges it faces while also providing some strategic insights on the best way to do so. The study is based on the review of literature and undertaking over 30 in-depth interviews with various stakeholders and experts in Bangladesh.

Country Platform

The NWP hosts the Partners for Water programme’s Bangladesh Country Platform. The Platform brings together Dutch organisations who are active or interested in working in Bangladesh to share knowledge, expertise and experiences. With its network, NWP helps provide information and updates on the developments in the water sector in Bangladesh and brings potential partners together to actively seek ways to jointly develop and execute initiatives and projects in Bangladesh.
