4 April 2024NWP hosted a Meet and Greet between the Panama Canal Authorities and Dutch NWP member organisations. Ms. Ilya Espino de Marotta, the Deputy CEO of the Panama Canal Authorities and Chief Sustainability Officer, was accompanied by Gabriela Saiz, Treasury and Finance Manager, Consultant Edward Cameron, and IFC staff member Arjun Bhalla (IFC is the private sector arm of the World Bank). They met with NWP member organisations: IV-Water, Wageningen University Research, Deltares, KWR, FutureWater, OBM Legal, and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.
The Panama Canal Authorities were in the Netherlands for an important reason. The Panama Canal is facing a historic drought and is seeking solutions to balance the water needs for transiting vessels with those of human consumption. The Canal also faces the challenge of saltwater intrusion.
The Panama Canal is working with the IFC on reviewing and revamping its decarbonization and climate policy strategy. The result is that the Canal is integrating responsibility for climate action across its entire leadership team and embedding its commitment to sustainability across the entire business. This includes embedding sustainability into capital investments in water management projects.
Since its inception, NWP has worked closely with Dutch embassies and consulates to look for ways to connect foreign markets’ needs to the Dutch water sector’s knowledge and offerings. Through them and the many sector collaborations taking place abroad and in which we are involved, NWP has forged a unique network that puts us in a strong position to matchmake between entities abroad and entities in the Netherlands. No matter where you are physically located, NWP can bring you closer to the Dutch water sector, its best practices, and the latest developments through our online event services. If you are interested in knowing more about the Dutch water sector, its know-how and innovations, contact NWP for more information.
