The cooperation between South Africa and the Netherlands is stipulated in a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and the Department of Water and Sanitation. In the workplan of this MoU, partnerships with the private sector, knowledge institutes and local government are intensified.
Both countries particularly work together on high-quality innovative water technology. Market studies conducted in the framework of the Partners for Water programme showed that there are also opportunities for collaboration in the focus areas of climate resilience and efficient water management. This includes efficient water for agrifood and re-use of industrial waste water and reservoir management.
NWP was actively involved in building the water relationship with South Africa. It informs the Dutch water sector about opportunities in South Africa through the Partners for Water Programme’s South Africa Country Platform. The Platform unites Dutch organisations with interests in South Africa and coordinates initiatives and activities in the country. Matchmaking in South Africa and with delegations from South Africa in the Netherlands are key activities. Its extensive network in the field of water in South Africa is of enormous benefit to companies interested in cooperation there.
