Resilient cities

Topic
Rotterdam embraced the resilient cities approach and the urgency of climate adaptation

The number of people living in cities – mainly in delta regions – is increasing rapidly. Moreover, cities have to deal with the effects of climate change. How do we retain the economic and social values of these cities? Cities worldwide have already set the first steps to become more resilient and future proof. NWP looks for international collaboration and partnerships to make cities more resilient.

Making our cities resilient

The urgency of adapting to climate change is diminished. Worldwide people already face the consequences of flood risks or water scarcity. Especially in urban areas adapting to climate change is of the utmost importance. The number of people living in cities will only increase in the coming years. The concentration of people and assets means that the impact of natural disasters and a changing climate on society and the economy can be devastating. While national leaders often struggle with protracted negotiations, city leaders have started working on concrete projects.

What are resilient cities?

Creating a resilient city means increasing the liveability and economic viability by making it more future and climate proof. There are many concepts and designs that fit a resilient cities approach. It all depends on the local situation what is most suitable. However, key elements of a resilient city are a holistic approach and the inclusion of all stakeholders like:

  • City leaders
  • Businesses
  • Financial institutions
  • Inhabitants
  • Non Governmental Organisations

Building resilient means that challenges become opportunities.
