The world is facing a global water crisis brought on by decreasing freshwater resources resulting from poor water management, ecological degradation and climate change. At the same time, unequal distribution of water and increasing pressure on water due to population growth and economic development is making the situation worse. Competition over scarce water resources and water-related disasters have increased significantly in recent years.

Study on Water & Crisis

In 2017, NWP commissioned a study entitled 'Water Crisis: Source of Conflict or Contribution to Stability' on the causes and implications of the water crisis and strategies to address it. If these issues are not addressed urgently, they are likely to increase migration and conflict. This is already happening in several countries and, given that it is surrounded by regions affected by a combination of water scarcity and political fragility, is of concern to Europe.

Four cournerstones

NWP is addressing the water & conflict issue by promoting the Dutch water sector’s expertise and experience on water management, water diplomacy and multi-stakeholder processes nationally and internationally. It has prioritised the MENA region and within it Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon, for its work. These countries are especially prone to water crises, aridity, instability and climate change. NWP’s ultimate aim is to prevent water being a cause of conflict and migration by initiating and facilitating integrated, innovative and long term collaboration. To this end, it has identified four cornerstones that underpin its work.

  1. Visibility
Create awareness on the urgency of Water & Crisis in government and water sector circles.

  2. Influencing
Influence national and international policy to put water on the Dutch Government’s international trade and development cooperation agenda.

  3. Enhancing knowledge
Act as an information hub on Water & Crisis by gathering and sharing the knowledge, developments and expertise generated in its network.

  4. Networking
Connect organisations and initiate and facilitate cooperation. Organise scoping missions to promote the Dutch water sector in addressing issues.

NWP collaborates with the Water, Peace and Security Partnership for its activities concerning Water & Conflict.

The activities of NWP on the Water & Crisis theme are within the framework of the Partners for Water Programme.
